Discover, Learn, Grow
At Little Learners Nursery, we want every child to feel heard, understood, and confident. Children communicate in lots of different ways, and we’re here to support them as they learn to express themselves. That’s why we use Makaton, visuals, and simple tools to help children recognise their feelings.
Makaton: Giving Children More Ways to Communicate
Makaton uses signs and symbols alongside spoken words. It’s easy to learn and helps children who are still developing their speech or who may need extra support.
Using Makaton in our daily routines helps children to:
-
Understand language more easily
-
Join in and feel included
-
Express their needs without frustration
It’s a gentle and effective way to boost communication for all children.
Please find below a selection of videos we use in Nursery that your child can enjoy and follow along with at home.
Visuals: Helping Children Make Sense of Their World
Young children learn best when they can see what’s happening. We use visual timetables, picture cards, and simple charts to help them understand routines and make choices.
Visuals help children to:
-
Feel secure and know what to expect
-
Follow instructions more independently
-
Communicate what they want or need
This makes their day more predictable, calm, and enjoyable.
We have started to really enhance the use of visuals to support our transitions and develop our Little Learners independence.
Recognising Feelings: Supporting Emotional Well-Being
Understanding emotions is an important part of growing up. We help children learn to recognise and talk about how they feel through stories, discussions, and emotion cards.
This supports children to:
-
Understand their own feelings
-
Manage emotions in healthy ways
-
Build positive relationships
-
Develop confidence and resilience
When children know how to express their feelings, they feel safer, happier, and more connected.
